Experimental Scheduling Idea: the Lottery

Post by Ben Robbins » June 17th, 2010, 7:01 am

I was thinking it might be interesting to experiment a little and really mix things up, because GPNW is only a day away and clearly I think it's never too late to add more wrinkles to the plan. Here's the idea:

- We pick a particular slot, like SAT-03 or SUN-02.

- Everybody who's interested in participating writes their name on a card and we drop them in a (big) hat.

- We draw four cards at a time, totally at random. Each batch of four game together for that slot, deciding among themselves what they want to play.

It's a pickup game, but without choosing who you're going to play with. Instead you're putting your destiny in the fickle hand of fate, letting the dice fall where they may, and so on. The more people join in, the more totally unpredictable it gets.

One of our mottos for GPNW is "meet new people, play new games," and this certainly seems to fit the bill. It seems like the kind of thing someone must have tried somewhere, but if so I haven't heard of it. My question is, do Go Play Nor'westers have the stones to give it a try? Or is it a terrible idea for some reason I haven't even considered?

I think this sounds like a pretty good idea. I'd definitely give it a try!

I like SAT-03. That way if you meet people you want to game with again, you'll have time -- if we did SUN-02, there'd only be one slot left.

If it turns out to be a good idea, we could theoretically do it again SUN-02.
