SAT-01 The Sword (Burning Wheel Revised, FULL)

Post by Zelbinian » June 27th, 2011, 4:18 am

The adventurers, exhausted from a long trek through underground caverns, finally come upon the treasure that they seek... The Sword. Now... who gets to take it home?
If you've never tried out Burning Wheel, play this now-classic con scenario - no experience necessary! I've been playing Burning Wheel for over a year now and I've run this scenario a time or two and it's way fun. I'll provide 2 sets of core books, 4 pre-genned characters... all the fixins. (I have dice, though if you want to bring 8 or so D6s that'd help out.)

If you're planning on joining me, consider downloading the first 25 pages of The Burning Wheel RPG System (PDF) to get a hold of some of the basics so we can get to playing faster!

I'm in.

My experience with Burning Wheel has been mixed. This sounds good, and I'm hoping for the best.

My wife (Cindy) and I would like to sign up for this, if there's still room.

Boom! We're full! If there's more interest, I can run another one at another time. Also, I'm running the Trouble in Hochen scenario on Sunday.

I'm intrigued by the personality system in Burning Wheel but have never really seen it in action. The combat system doesn't do all that much for me, even though I admire the elegance of the weapon stats. I picked this scenario over Trouble in Hochen because this one seemed more like a personality drama and less like a regular RPG adventure.

[Way Too Much Information]

The Sword is interesting in that it both is and is not prototypical Burning Wheel. On the one hand it flips "ordinary" gaming situations on their head, turning finding the treasure and dividing it up from a boring end-of-campaign-arc ritual into a complex and fun game unto itself that demonstrates how table arguments can be dealt with mechanically. On the other hand, it's rare for an entire session of Burning Wheel to be devoted to intra-party conflict, though moments of it certainly happen frequently. It's designed to cause a lot of conflict and thus provide fertile ground for learning the mechanics in context.

Duel of Wits is pure hotness and you're sure to experience that in this game. Things often devolve into violence, though, so be prepared, but unless people really have murder in their eyes we'll just use a Bloody Versus test instead of Fight!.

Fight!, btw, is definitely the crunchiest bit in Burning Wheel and, as a result, is the hardest for some people to get used to. It works best when it's used only when it *really* matters - like when something major is at stake, especially if that something major is tied to a Belief. Then the nail-biting combination of skill and luck that it is really shines. (Also helps if people are relatively comfortable with the mechanics of it.)

OK, then this scenario sounds like what I'm looking for.
